Have you ever wondered what search engine optimisation is and why you need it?  Then read this blog for an insight into seo.

Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO for short, is a means of working with your websites XHTML code, content, web pages and links to ensure that is fully functional and understandable by the search engines such as Google, Bing, Ask, Yahoo and AOL.

SEO is different from SEM.  Many companies will sell you SEO work but are actually performing SEM, or Search Engine Marketing.  To make it easy to understand the difference, if you employ someone to do SEO for your website then the business involved should request access to your website XHTML code.  If they don't then they are either employing black hat techniques to fool the search engines, which you DON'T want to do, or they are using SEM.

True SEO work involves looking at the source code of your website and tidying it up as well as adding pertanent information into it to make the search engines job easier.

Why make it easier for search engines?

At present the internet holds 4.2 billion websites worldwide and it is predicted to run out of space in the next 5 years.  However, don't panic measures are being put in place to add more servers to the internet that will provide space for 45 billion websites in the future, Phew!

Take Google as an example, today it has to record information on 4.2 billion websites increasing to a staggering 45 billion websites in the future, how is it going to best do this?  Or more importantly why should your website be indexed on page 1 of Google over all the others?  Knowing the numbers you are competiting with now gives an indication of why your company needs Search Engine Optimization services.

Google and the other search engines have robots or spiders that constantly trawl the internet checking websites, ranking and indexing them accordingly.  Approximately every 1 to 2 weeks Googles spiders will visit your website.  Knowing this it is your job to be a good host and provide this robot with all the information is needs quickly and easily.  This is the purpose of SEO.

Good Search Engine Optimisation is ongoing.  It provides good XHTML code that Search Engine robots can interpret and rank easily with all the necessary introductory information it requires before it explores your website.  On each subsequent visit SEO provides Search Engine robots with something new to look at.  By putting in place good search engine optimisation practises, will ensure that your website will be ranked highly and will appear on Page 1, way ahead of the other current 4.2 billion websites out there.

Search Engine robots cannot handle websites that use frames or websites that are coded purely in flash or other ways, so if you have a really attractive, flashy website that is the bees knees and you are struggling to get it ranked by Google then my advice is go back to the original code and find out what it is.  You may find you've built a brick wall that the Search Engines just can't get through, in which case you may need to rewrite your website in order for the search engines to be able to read the information to rank it properly.

Key note:  Websites not only need to be attactrive to the human eye but also to the search engine robots in order for them to perform well on the internet.
