Frequently asked questions ...

How long will it take before my new web site is found in the search engines?

We estimate it will take 8 – 12 weeks, largely due to the MASSIVE number of web sites on the internet.

What do I need for a web site?

To own and publish a web site you will need the following basic components; a web page, domain name, hosting and an email account.

Can I use a free email account?

For a business web site we do not recommend the use of FREE or personal email account. An email account that matches your domain name makes it much easier for your clients to remember both the email and the web address, and it also looks a lot more professional.

How long will it take to produce my web site?

A basic 3 page business web site produced by Specnet, can take as little as 3 weeks to complete. We find the more organised and focussed our client is then the quicker we can design and code a web site.

Do I need a web site?

Close to everyone needs a web site today. A web site enables the exchange of information about products and services on a 24/7 basis.

What is a domain name?

This is your web site address, for example www.specnet.co.uk.

What is a URL?

This is the same as your domain name, URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator

What is hosting?

This is a piece of disk space permanently available on the internet, where your web site files are stored so that they are always available to be viewed from anywhere in the world.

Who owns my domain name?

Your domain name will be registered by Specnet in your name or your business name. However, domain names are only ever “leased”, at the end of the lease period (usually 2 years for a .co.uk and 1 year for a .com) you have first refusal on renewing your domain name before it goes on general release to the rest of the world.

Can I change my own web site?

Specnet offer Content Managed Systems or CMS web sites that have built in editing facilities, so if you’d like to change your own web site more than say once a month, this would be the best route to take.

What is a Search Engine?

A search engine is a database holding information about web sites that are viewable on the internet. Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo and Ask then provide a search facility to the general public to enable them to source relevant web sites quickly. The information stored on a search engine is largley found automatically by a program called a spider or robot.

What is a Search Directory?

A search directory has considerably more human involvement than a search engine. After you have manually entered your details someone from the organisation will usually telephone you to confirm your details and endeavour to sell you their enhanced listing. Examples of search directories are Yell.com, Applegate and CityVisitor.

What is a Search Engine Spider or Robot?

This is the name given to the automated programs which trawl the internet looking for new information, every search engine has its own spider or robot.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

This is the name given to the process of making a web site search engine readable or search engine friendly, in order to assist the search engine spiders in finding the information they are looking for on your web site. All of the web sites created by Specnet have Search Engine Optimization built-in.

How often should I update my web site?

Specnet recommend at least 6 times a year, search engines use changes to web sites as proof that the company who owns it is still in business, and therefore worthy of being re-indexed.

Do I need text on my web site?

Yes. Search engines “read” the text on your web site and it is this text that they use to index your web site. A web site with no search engine readable text is effectively invisible to search engines and this is not a good situation for your business.
