Welcome to the Specnet June Newsletter, this month we've been sweltering in the FANTASTIC weather, shedding a tear or two for England and planning a summer holiday.
Domain names
The latest release of domain names is the .co, this used to be used for Colombia, but now it has been changed to general release via a somewhat convoluted process, first a 'sunrise' where you could apply to trade mark your preferred domain name and therefore get first refusal, now the 'landrush' where you can apply for a particular domain name, this ends on July 20th after which the domains will be offered on a first come first served bases as is the case now for most other domain names, for more information see the official website at www.cointernet.co.
Remember, you NEVER own a domain name you only hold it on a lease, so if you miss the renewal it goes back into the public domain and could be purchased by another business or a domain name 'farm' as I call them, these people buy hundreds of domain names and then sell them often for around $5,000 which is the recent quote I was given!
Viruses
Computer viruses have been a burden on businesses for as long as I can remember. Very talented individuals spend their time and creativity for destructive purposes for no other reason than they can very strange. One of the most destructive ones currently doing the rounds purports to be a parcel delivery often from UPS, I have AVG Small Business Edition and it successfully removes the virus, but beware this is an extremely destructive virus and the three businesses I know who have been infected by this have lost a lot of time and data when the infected PC had to be rebuild. General rule on viruses;
- Have an up-to-date anti-virus software
- Do you know the sender?
- Are you expecting the email?
- If it's from UPS, are you expecting a parcel from them?
- Would you expect the supplier to have that email address?
- Dont open strange attachments
What we're up to outside of work.....
Steve has a fitness test coming up for his role as a Rugby referee, he's putting in the running and so is his border collie!
Rhianna watched the England game in a pub in Hinckley and watched on as disappointed fans threw their pints away, what a waste.
Rob is preparing for his RoSPA advanced motorcycling test, he got silver 3 years ago and is working hard to get gold this time around.
Amanda is working towards level 2 in Parelli horse training and loving every minute of it.
